When I got pregnant with my daughter, my sister was very cold and shrill. She held no excitement for me. When we were planning the gender reveal, we got into a fight regarding her bringing her new boyfriend that I didn’t feel comfortable meeting for the first time at something special planned for us. Not because I didn’t want to, not for any reason that she continues to extort, but because nothing could ever just be about someone else. It always had to be what was going on in her life, what exciting things she had, what new things were going on with her… and that was fine for a really long time because I’m the youngest sibling and I didn’t have a lot of special moments to share or be celebrated for. But having our baby, it was my special moment, something finally exciting and happy going on for me and my life. That was the last time we’ve spoke in 4 years. She continues creating a victim mentality and story for our family members.. even after I had my daughter, whom suffered a traumatic birth with extreme brain damage and epilepsy, she never reached out. Sent me a measly card saying “praying for you,” but never put in the effort to be present during the hardest time in my life, the saddest time of my life.. I was grieving what first time motherhood would look like. I was grieving a life my daughter should have had. I was grieving a life we were going to have together. And nothing…. I reached out several times trying to make things right because in some really hard moments.. all I wanted was my sister. But she never responded, she never showed, she never tried… so on top of grieving what should have been my healthy child, a good birth, and the joys of motherhood.. I was grieving a relationship with my sister.. and over time I learned that it was unforgivable. That I did all I could do. That if the shoe was on the other foot, no issue could’ve ever been too big for me to be by her side during the worst time in her life. I no longer call her my sister. I have heard the words “well that’s your sister, you have to forgive her someday.” And all I think is “yeah she was my sister… but I was supposed to be hers too and no one ever said that to her.”
