Having to wake up my toddler at 4am and carry him off the plane that never took off while kicking our bags down the aisle because I had no free hands is crazy work. And the entire flight staff watching and proceeding to ignore us and high five each other for good work is even crazier. 🥲

Some advice if this ever happens again from a long time airline employee. Don’t ever stand in a line to get a “free voucher”. Hotels could fill up by the time they get to you, or there could be a computer glitch like what you described. Just secure your own hotel/meals/ground transportation quickly, get receipts and submit them later. You’ll be in your hotel room while those others are still standing in line at the airport. Flights are full, so utilize the app as much as possible to secure confirmed seats to an alternate city if that works for you. And don’t be nervous to try standby on the flights that are full. You never know who else may miss their flight, thereby opening up a seat for you

been having my huge share of issues with united lately. i've been overnight diverted/stranded and on other occasions delayed 11+ hours. all i wanna say is take screenshots of everything, print boarding passes when able, and send a packet with all that over to customer care with a cover letter explaining everything and timeline. keep fighting until you get a resolution you like. fought for a month for my miles back but after an 11+hr overnight delay i finally got more than my trip back in compensation even though it was completed. and yes travel insurance is worth it

I had something similar happen to me at Dulles a few years ago and my international flight got cancelled at midnight. I was stranded overnight in the airport with my 9 month old and had to sleep on one of the benches. It was a nightmare

Airlines in the US have become so bad when we travel with kids we always make sure to bring food, pillow, blanket, and an eye mask, and change of clothes in our carry-on, on the off chance we get stranded at the airport.

It happened with us on international flight. Flight kept getting delayed. Finally boarded around 1 am. Then we deplaned at 2:30 am because the crew timed out. Flight cancelled!

I have been in your exact shoes, down to the toddler in the middle of the night, closed airport, no flights out, and no cabs or nearby hotels thing. Ours was on Allegiant.

Happened to me with American, i didn’t have a baby though, I contacted customer service on the chat through the app and told them we needed a hotel voucher and got one luckily
