Hey aziz! “Dari” was pushed as an official label in Afghanistan under a Pashtun-dominated government to distinguish us from Iranian Farsi and create a separate national identity. The language itself didn’t suddenly become something different.

Dari: Afghanistan
Farsi/Persian: Iran
Tajiki: Tajikistan
Let’s say you need a translator somewhere. Ask for a Dari translator. If you ask for a Persian translator, it might be harder for you to understand them.

Essentially, Dari and Farsi are the same language, with differences in dialect, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Persian has deep historical roots throughout the region, including present-day Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia. “Dari” is the traditional name for the eastern variety of Persian and is historically associated with the language of the royal court.
In Afghanistan, we call it Dari, while in Iran it is generally called Farsi. Some Afghans also prefer the term Farsi because they root themselves as Persian and its linguistic and cultural heritage, but Dari and Farsi are the same, just like American English and British English. I hope this helps.

This is something I explained to my cousins who were born and raised here. I was born and grew up back home, but I live here now, so I've experienced both perspectives.A simple way to explain it is that Dari and Farsi are two standard varieties of the Persian language. They're mutually understandable, much like American English and British English. The biggest differences are pronunciation, some vocabulary, and certain expressions. In Afghanistan, the official term is Dari, while in Iran it's called Farsi. So when an Afghan and an Iranian speak, they generally understand each other very well, even though their accents and word choices may differ. Hope this helps 🫶🏽

You guys speak Farsi just like us Iranians and the language is called Farsi regardless of which country. Your accent of Farsi is called Dari. In Iran we have multiple different dialects and accents of Farsi as well.

Sorry for a bunch of messages. But you heard it yourself. Your family says Farsi gap mezani. Right? Because for us afghans it’s our Farsi. It has nothing to do with Iranians. Nothing.

Dari basically was coined in the late 1900s by the Afghan Pashtun government because they wanted to weaken the Farsizabans power in Afghanistan. That being said, many say Farsi because it is our dialect of Farsi. We speak more Persian than Iranians do. In all if there is one thing to extract from everything I said it’s there are officially three Persian dialects. Afghan Persian is officially called Dari Persian but the Afghan government in the late 1900s but we colloquially say Farsi because this is the Farsi dialect for Afghans.

It’s Farsi. Iranians are always going to say otherwise because they don’t want to be associated with afghans for some reason 😂

Dari based on Afghanistan, Farsi based on Iranian which has different dialogue. Most Afghans say they are Persians which they are not & they are even ashamed of calling themselves Afghani.

Its simple, for afghans its dari, for iranians/persians its farsi. Farsi is the original. Dari was a later invented seperation term. They are very similar And both can understand eachother. Certain words and phrases are different. afghans who dont know understand the word dari just say its farsi. Same as the difference beetween afghans calling themselves afghan vs afghani. Afghani technically means afghan currency.
