@zephzoid: When their neighborhood lost its only grocery store, West Oakland residents opened one and became the owners themselves. Mandela Grocery Cooperative opened on 7th Street in 2009, near the West Oakland BART station. Before it, residents relied mostly on liquor stores and corner shops for fresh food.
