Candida keeps coming back? A restrictive “Candida diet” isn’t necessarily the answer. Candida is a type of yeast that can normally exist in and on the body without causing a problem. The issue is when conditions allow it to overgrow, which can contribute to infections such as vaginal thrush. And when someone is experiencing recurrent thrush, I want to look beyond simply cutting out sugar. The old approach was often an extremely restrictive “Candida diet” designed to essentially starve the yeast. But recurrent Candida can be more complicated than that, and repeatedly restricting your diet doesn’t necessarily address why the infection keeps returning. First, we want to establish whether Candida is actually what’s causing your symptoms. Vaginal itching, irritation and discharge can have other causes, so recurrent symptoms are worth properly investigating rather than repeatedly self-treating. Then we can start looking at the bigger picture. What may be allowing Candida to keep recurring? Are there factors affecting the vaginal microbiome? Have there been repeated antibiotics? Are there metabolic or immune factors worth considering? And does the vaginal environment need support once the infection has been appropriately treated? This is why our approach at Nourishing Apothecary is individualised rather than simply telling everyone with thrush to stop eating carbohydrates. Jess is one of our naturopaths who works extensively with complex gut health, vaginal microbiome concerns and recurrent Candida. If you’re struggling with recurrent thrush or Candida, you can book with Jess Australia wide via Zoom, or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. www.nourishingapothecary.com #Candida #Thrush #RecurrentThrush #VaginalHealth #WomensHealth
