The kid is officially on the board, and after all the noise surrounding him over the first few games, it was genuinely nice to see him get rewarded. This is an 18-year-old playing his first NHL season after being selected first overall by the Leafs. Of course there are going to be moments where he looks like a rookie. Of course he's going to make mistakes. Of course he's going to need time to adjust to the speed, physicality and structure of the NHL. That's completely normal. Yet somehow people were already acting like the sky was falling after a handful of games. 😭 What makes it even crazier is how quickly people started turning on a kid that Leafs fans were celebrating like crazy just a few months ago. We watched the draft, saw McKenna put on that Leafs jersey and immediately started dreaming about what this kid could become. Now that he's actually here, suddenly every missed opportunity gets dissected like he's supposed to be a finished superstar already. He's 18 YEARS OLD. Let the kid breathe. He doesn't need to come into Toronto and immediately score every night to prove that he's special. The talent is obvious, the vision is there, and you can already see flashes of the player he can become. Even Leafs fans online have been pushing back against the overreactions and reminding everyone that this is a development process. And that's why I'll always defend this kid. Leafs fans have been waiting years for a young superstar like this to come through the door, and now that he's finally wearing the blue and white, I want to enjoy the journey instead of complaining about every little mistake. Let McKenna learn. Let him make mistakes. Let him figure out the league. Let him build chemistry with his teammates and gain confidence shift by shift. Tonight he got his first NHL point, and you could see how much it meant. Maybe it's a simple assist, but it's the first of what should be MANY points in a Maple Leafs jersey.
