Unless that HR meeting was to run through every possible benefit you are eligible for and to check what foods you would like sent to the hospital it’s a hard no for me.

Less than 48 hours after the delivery and death of my 21 week micro preemie, my boss called and asked when I was coming back. Mind you, I had atypical preeclampsia and HELLP, and was still on a magnesium sulfate drip for the seizures… And my baby had just died. He said “Since you obviously no longer need maternity leave, when can I expect you back?” No job is worth that kind of bs.

Three weeks after my twin died I showed back up at work without telling anyone I was coming. I came back to a promotion, a sizable pay bump, and an expectation I was meant to be out with pay for a total of two months. They wanted me back, they wanted it when I was ready, and they wanted to show those things. They let me just come to work for the remaining month to just not be alone.

As an HR professional, the only conversation I’d have with this father is “What can we do to support you and your family? Will you be adding your newborn to the health insurance?” I’m horrified by the stories in the comments.

FYI, having baby in the NICU means you can’t quit. My micropreemie’s NICU stay was $1.6 million 20 years ago.

My boss would have emailed the entire company to not bother me. That job doesn’t care about you at all.

The board of nursing tried to pull my mom’s nursing license because she sought mental treatment. What she went for had nothing to do with her job either, but one of her coworkers found out and reported her to the board and claimed that she was “mentally unfit”. Thankfully that woman was fired for violating HIPPA and my mom got to keep her license, but the fact that they even questioned my mom to begin with was ridiculous.

I woke up to a puddle of blood, I took the damn test at work a couple worker made me take it!!! i got fired for short notice... I had an ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery the day after I got out of the hospital I got called in because the manager (a single 21 y/o man) had an emergency. the food and beverage director rushed into work and carried me to my car crying. he gave me a months salary and told me to quit "this place is toxic" after that month. the first job a woman fired me, she had a child. People dont actually care.

Yeah I was fired two months after my daughter was killed because I "could no longer perform the job duties required". I was a Recovery Specialist for a women and children drug and alcohol rehab center. Not transferred. Not put on leave. Fired. They had other options and that's the one they chose because the manager didn't like me. I had never in my life been fired from a job until then.

but you can't leave, because your health insurance is tied to your employment and you have a NICU baby (stuck working while recovering from leukemia)

My best friend found out she had terminal cancer, received a text from our boss asking when she was coming back to work or if they needed to “make other arrangements”. She died 3 weeks later. I quit a year after she died. I hated that fucking place.

My first job at 16, my dad died on a Saturday. I said I couldn’t make it in for a week cuz of the funeral. Next Saturday, I walked in and was asked why I was there, they thought I had quit and no longer wanted me back. I said my dad died and left in tears.

My baby was in NICU for two weeks before he died 💔 my company left me alone the entire time AND gave me two months off fully paid. Then let me come back at my pace.

My husband had a massive seizure while I was driving us home on the highway. Ambulance took him to hospital and I’m following along. They start booking it I mean at least 95mph while he apparently was having a second one. He spent the night in the hospital. His boss was on vacation at the time. When he got back and my husband back to work he had a meeting where he was told to plan these things better because it put a lot of strain on the team having both my husband and himself out of the office at the same time. Remember always the job will have a new hire in your seat before they get you in the ground.

A colleague’s family member left this world by their own hand recently, we (small mgmt team) clubbed together to get him decent meals delivered for a week (made sure it was correct dietary for his wife too) and made sure his work was covered til he comes back. Life is not work.

I was the editor-in-chief of a small group of newspapers. My mom died at 9 a.m. I still was expected to be at work to finish a special edition. I got there by noon, and no one offered to help. Not my boss, my staff, not anyone. My grief had to wait. I now own two of those papers and make sure my employees never feel that unimportant, unsupported, or alone.

I was made to attend a Teams staffing meeting at 6:45 in morning while in the ICU with sepsis and highly medicated on Dilaudid. Apparently I cussed everyone out, worked out staffing for 240 employees and disconnected. I no longer work there.

I was asked for proof of my Mothers death……I stormed into HR ANGRY AF and screamed WTF DO YOU NEED HER FUCKING DEAD BODY?? They didn’t question me further and to screw them I took my 5 day bereavement and then 40 hour PTO came back and put in my 2 week notice because I found a different job while out 🤷‍♀️

Just for a brighter story to balance it out: in 2021 I had to flee with my 3 children hours away from my work office for our safety. They immediately gave me three months paid off and then when I needed money for a deposit for an apartment, they paid it for me. They made me permanently work from home and still gave me a raise just months later for my job performance and tenacity.

I told my boss the date and time of my first oncology appt and how nervous I was to start chemo, his response "it's the end of the month, can you reschedule it?". I quit a couple days later.

My husbands boss fired him because he wanted an extra day off for the day after our wedding. His boss was his father.
