@alex_military_money: the military gives us some incredible benefits. but some of y’all need to stop treating them like free money. 😂 i LOVE a good military perk. but if you’re carrying credit card debt to enjoy those premium card benefits or buying a house just because you qualify for a VA loan, we need to chat. we’ve built a lot of our financial success around military benefits, but we’ve also learned when to say no. because a benefit is only a benefit if it actually benefits you. which one did i get wrong? tell me in the comments. 👀 #militarytiktok #militarylife #militarywife #militaryfamily #military
I did ppm when I separated. Paid a total of about 6.5k gas included and I got 17k back so I pocketed 10.5k plus 2k from iPac bc I was moving with a dependent 😩😩

I agree with every single one of these! Heavy on the moving part, no one takes care of your stuff like you do during a move!

You should basically always use a VA loan lol. That’s horrible advice.

Bought homes through different PCS’s in the past 20+ years. Hired property management companies to mange them all for us. Talk about profit in the long run. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Technically on base housing is free, BAH is 100 percent government assistance for housing. At anytime, you could be ordered to live on based in government quarters. This is also the reason the government audits cost in the area’s of base to see if they’re over paying or underpaying on BAH rate.

I will forever move ourselves because I have trust issues 😂. The commissary is just easier if you live on base than having to fight traffic to get on and off base. But the VA loan, we’re saving for when we’re done w the Military.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but a lot of these are the price of convenience. After 18 years and 9 moves you couldn’t pay me enough to pack and move myself. Especially after 5 consecutive overseas moves. And having my spouse be home in 3 minutes after pt to help with school mornings, having lunch together everyday, and no commute home is worth every penny of BAH to us personally. Not everyone wants to spend that much extra time with their spouse though, so I get it! 🤣👌🏼

Yep, everything is subjective. I ALWAYS shopped at the commissary in Hawaii because everything was so expensive elsewhere. NEVER shopped at the commissary in Germany because the German stores were so much cheaper and fresher!

Living in base is more cheaper but I don’t like to leave in base. We just prefer to pay more to leave in a better house.

The VA hospitals are an hour each way. I pay for a private pcm w quarterly visits and I’m heard and not treated generically.

Additionally to the living off base part, RPP is an AMAZING program, been in for 15 years and just recently learned about it and I love it, the only thing I’m indifferent on is shopping at the commissary, the amount I save by going to the commissary is HUGE, that goes for any area I’ve ever lived at personally, maybe there’s areas that are close in price? Just no where I’ve ever been

All true expect #3. Although Premium credit cards are a "benefit" of your military service, unlike the other benefits metioned thats are provided by the military, Premium credit cards are only to offered to military members by banks and only if you qualify. Some banks also give the same benefit to veterans, so you dont necessarily need to be in the military for this one.

Uh i agree except living on post saves us so much on utilities 🥲 we are a family of 6 so maybe this is the perspective of a higher ranking person cuz living on post as an E-5 and an E-4 is DEFINITELY worth it to us. Also the commissary sucks most foods are expired or just bad and not a lot of variety either. But overall benefits are ok

It makes me feel ill when people say on base housing is “free” 😭 YOURE LITERALLY PAYING THEM. We have to stop with that weird propaganda.

💯 agreed! Especially the moving! We used our VA loan once on our first home but that was it. Definitely good tools if used right though.

your rank plays a strong part of these decisions E1-E4 stand to gain the most living on base and shopping on base. skip the Amex card they can't afford it. self move they dont have alot of stuff. loans its not your forever home anyway.

For #2, it makes me sick how much on base housing takes, but I felt better after learning that the same house would have more expensive outside of base and I really appreciate the quick help from maintenance on base
