I think there’s an idea some people have that the more suffering/negativity a novel contains, the deeper or more profound it is. Trauma for the sake of trauma doesn’t make an interesting plot.

I feel like some women have a fascination with gay male suffering. I remember growing up and reading fan fictions where the male lead was being subject to violence from parental figures and peers and it became such a running theme I had to stop reading them entirely.

This book nearly broke me. Not in a trauma way, in a “why is this so nonsensical” way. Why has Yanigahara never spoken to men about male friendship. It was the equivalent of “she breasted boobily down the stairs” with men and their emotions.
