Even though there is no sound, I can hear them yelling out Mista Mista and asking for chocolates.

I think of these 2 often. Mohammed and Parwana would sell scarves and bracelets to support their families. I still have the one they gave me and wear it everday. I would buy them ice cream while I was in Kabul. I moved to Bagram not long after the embassy was attacked in 2011. I never got to say goodbye and I never saw them again. For awhile after I came home in 2012 I imagined seeing them again when I was old. That dream didnt last long, on 9/8/12 they were killed in a suicide bombing. I don’t think it will ever stop hurting and I’m not sure I want it to.

I used to give them MREs and water until they started jumping on the back of the truck and stealing every thing when we slowed down 😂. I bet I gave them hundreds of Mountain Dew Code Reds over the time I was there

My wife would send tootsie pops and I’d throw them and watch the scramble. The kids that threw rocks I’d throw fireball jawbreakers.

No lie I think about Tha lil man in Iraq that constantly came out and saluted us on or convoys. I hope he realized that the moment was bigger than getting bottled water, food, and candy from me. He taught me something that affected me as a man growing up in my 20’s that I still feel in my 40s.

mista mista dollar for shoes.
it still breaks my heart.

I sometimes think about all the kids that I played ball with and handed candy too. they would be adults now, if they made it this far!
