I never planned to come back to Vietnam. Fifteen years ago, I came to Saigon simply for a holiday. I was born here, but I grew up in Germany. And when I came back, something about this city fascinated me. So I thought: Why not stay for a while? I found a beautiful house, made it my home — and that was the beginning. Was it my dream to build a business in Vietnam? No. Was it my big plan? Also no. It was almost an accident. A coincidence. And it certainly wasn’t easy. For the first three years, I basically didn’t make a single dollar. I had no clients. Nobody was waiting for me. What I had successfully done in Germany — high-end interiors, exceptional furniture, craftsmanship, beautiful objects — was still something very unfamiliar here at the time. It took me almost seven years before I started doing the kind of high-quality projects in Vietnam that I had already been doing in Germany. And today, I’m standing here in my own showroom and office in the middle of Saigon. People sometimes ask me: “So what is your plan for the future?” My answer is very simple: I don’t need to know exactly where I will be in ten years. I just need to know what I can do well today. Because I believe if you do your very best today — with discipline, passion and consistency — tomorrow has a very good chance of becoming something good too. My life in Vietnam was never the plan.
