![Is JD Flannel Donuts actually the best donut shop in California? Located in San Juan Capistrano, this craft bakery gained national attention after ranking #1 in the country—so we pulled up to test whether the scratch-made hype is real. Everything here is fried fresh in small batches daily with zero artificial flavors or preservatives. What we tried: • Brown Butter Sea Salt: Their signature vanilla cake donut coated in a rich browned butter glaze and topped with Maldon sea salt brittle. • Valrhona Chocolate Ganache: Fluffy, brioche-style raised yeast donut with deep dark chocolate. The verdict: [8/ 10]. The cake donut hits a rare balance—crisp exterior without absorbing excess oil, and the salt cuts straight through the sweetness.
