HERE’S WHY ASH DYKES MIGHT ACTUALLY SURVIVE THE CONGO BASIN… AND WHY PEOPLE MAY BE UNDERESTIMATING HIM. 🌍👀 Thousands of people online have been debating whether Ash Dykes can make it through his Congo Basin expedition. Some think he’s taking on too much. Others believe his experience gives him a real chance. But there’s an important detail many people seem to overlook: Ash isn’t entering this expedition without preparation. His Project 6 adventure involves travelling more than 700 kilometres down the Sangha River, from Nola in the Central African Republic toward Mossaka in the Republic of the Congo. The journey is expected to take approximately three to four weeks. And the first day is now behind him. According to Ash’s latest personal update, the team covered around 60 kilometres. He described it as a hot day, but they kept moving and eventually settled into camp for the night. He also revealed that the heat and humidity were intense inside their tent. The team briefly entered the river to bathe before getting their bags organised for the next day. His message ended on a positive note: he was happy to finally be paddling in the Congo Basin. But why might he succeed? 1. EXPERIENCE MATTERS. Ash has undertaken major expeditions before. In 2019, he became the first person to walk the entire length of the Yangtze River. He has also completed demanding journeys across Mongolia and Madagascar. That experience doesn’t guarantee success, but it gives him valuable lessons in endurance, planning and adapting to difficult conditions. 2. HE HAS A TEAM. Ash is travelling with a local guide and a UK-based videographer. The local guide’s knowledge can be particularly valuable when navigating an unfamiliar river environment. 3. HIS KAYAKS OFFER FLEXIBILITY. The expedition uses inflatable kayaks that can be deflated and carried when a stretch of river cannot safely be navigated. That gives the team another option when conditions make paddling unsuitable. 4. THEY HAVE PREPARED FOR RISKS BEYOND WILDLIFE. The challenges aren’t limited to crocodiles, hippos or snakes. Heat, humidity, infections, malaria and limited access to medical assistance are serious considerations. Ash has discussed preparation, medical supplies and satellite communication as parts of the expedition’s safety planning. 5. HE KNOWS THAT CAUTION MATTERS. Experience isn’t about believing you’re invincible. It’s about recognising when conditions are unsafe, listening to local knowledge and making sensible decisions rather than forcing progress at any cost. Of course, nobody can guarantee that Ash will complete the entire journey safely. The expedition is still in its early stages, and one successful day cannot predict what the next few weeks will bring. But perhaps the real question isn’t whether the Congo Basin is dangerous. It’s whether Ash and his team can manage the challenges they encounter, one day at a time. Day One: approximately 60 kilometres covered. First jungle camp: complete. Day Two: next. SO, HAS EVERYONE BEEN TOO QUICK TO COUNT HIM OUT? Or is it simply too early to decide whether he’ll complete this enormous challenge? Let’s discuss it in the comments. 👇🌿
