@drwilloughjenkins: A friendship breakup is a real loss for a teenage girl. Her friend group shapes how she sees herself, where she feels safe, and how she gets through each school day. Losing it can shake all three at once. Some common responses make the pain harder. Saying “You will make new friends” tells her the hurt is easy to replace. Speaking badly about the other girl can backfire, since many friends make up, and then your daughter may feel stuck between you and her friend. Calling the other mother takes the situation out of your daughter’s hands and can leave her feeling embarrassed. Here is what helps instead. Treat this as grief and let it move at her pace. Grief comes in waves, so she may feel angry one day and quiet the next. Keep her routines steady, including school, sleep, meals, and movement. Structure gives her something solid to lean on while her feelings are shifting. Pay close attention to how she pulls back. Some time alone can help a teen heal. Pulling away from everyone, skipping school, big changes in sleep or eating, or any talk of hurting herself are signs that she needs you to step in. Contact her doctor as soon as you notice these changes. The most helpful thing you can do is sit with her in the loss and let her know you are staying right there. You do not need to find her a new friend group right away, jumping into fix can feel invalidating and rush her. Move at her time. Send this to a parent who is walking through this right now. Save it for the day you need it. #parentingtips #parentingteens #parentsoftiktok #parentingsupport #Friendships

Happened at the beginning of y9 for my daughter when a new girl arrived and took her bff away. The whole year group isolated her to the degree that mum’s w daughters in other year groups were asking me if my daughter was ok. It was horrific. She felt betrayed+massively let down. As a mum I felt desperate to fix things, though my approach was v sim to the above, it was a v hard but stick with it, it’s great advice. My daughter made some new friends on a more superficial level- and left at the end of y11. The friends she made at the new school during y12-13 have become her ride or dies and they’re gorgeous girls inside and out. Hope this gives hope to anyone out there going through it.
