A possible third option…because Cal is like her, she might have felt he was clever enough to not need any help getting through life as she hadn’t, but Aron in his softness might struggle more as Adam did and be more prone to being taken advantage of. Symbolically, I definitely view her leaving her fortune to Aron as the singular time in her life she chooses good.

I choose to believe another option. That she saw how deeply Cal loved his family and how much he didn’t want to be like her. So when she names Aron as her “only son”, then it was her way of freeing Cal from her family name/being tied to her. He was the one to seek her and see her in her true form like Charles did.

I don’t think Cathy is meant to be portrayed as someone inherently evil. She has a skewed judgement of the world being all evil and the people who aren’t evil are fools. Cathy was assaulted as a girl and that has shaped who she is because her attacker, a man, is the evil figure in her origin story and so to survive the world of men, she too herself does evil things to gain freedom. In the story she only harms people who are in her way, she doesn’t do bad things for the sake of it. I think Cathy gave Aaron all her money becahze she believes that Aron is a good person based off what cal told her. Cathy never tries to kill Adam until she locks her in the room when she’s trying to leave. She could’ve killed him before she gave birth but instead she told him she was gonna leave, whereas she’s killed the others who got in her way of freedom . I think Cathy sees goodness in Aron and by giving him the money, she may feel like her legacy will end in goodness

Steinbeck considered Cathy the personification of evil. She left her fortune to one son because she understood that disproportionate lice and affection destroys families like nothing else could. Her heir could just as easily have been Caleb; the point was sowing division.

She leaves the money to her son. So that way her other son can see that he's not as good as he thinks He is and that everybody has bad in him. or maybe because the fortune she made came from “unsavory” things, she saved Cal from receiving inheritance that would continue generational curses. this was her form of “timshel” by allowing him to choose another path despite their similarities.

She got upset that Adam never came back for her even tho she was certain he would, she got upset Adam never talked about her to to her sons - highlighting her narcissism - i think it forced her to realize she lost the fight and good wins, and to make up for it she wants aron to continue the legacy of good like Adam did even tho he did it with “bad money” and Aron would too- it’s the slow evolution of healing the effects of generational traumas. I also think she clearly was triggered by evil men and wanted power over it so when Caleb said he was like her, instead of feeling pride she felt disgust that he would be just another evil man like the ones who hurt her

Probably she thought that the son that is similar to her is smarter and we’ll find a ways to make money but the other one is weak. I need help and maybe she feels guilty about the way she behaved towards the Dad but then all these are empathetic reasons so I don’t even know actually has she actually got empathy? Probably not probably I’m wrong.
