As a jeweler, and this is solely my opinion, I think it’s because people want status and if it’s accessible to everyone - that status is gone. It’s an equal playing field.

Personally I think people don’t like labs because large diamonds used to be a status symbol and now its not because labs make it so affordable. I think there’s a lot of people who spent a lot of money on large natural stones, and are mad that people now have a stone that looks the same and can’t be differentiated, for a fraction of the price

I don’t like lab grown diamonds because they cost like $50 to make and I’m not investing my money into something that is made essentially the same as CZ. I want natural diamonds from the earth not man made gems at a marked up price

I think the hate for lab diamonds is manufactured by natural diamond sellers and people who think that labs devalue their natural stones 👀 There’s room in the market for both!

The only reason people don’t like lab grown diamonds is because they’re sad their overpriced diamonds can be replicated.. and that hurts their social status.

It’s 100% about class. Some people hate the diamonds have become accessible to sooo many people that weren’t able to before. Personally I think it’s fun but 🤷🏻‍♀️

As someone who has a lab diamond now, I actually used to have a really negative view of them. I thought “lab” automatically meant fake. I think for so long we were taught that having a “real diamond” meant having a natural diamond, so anything else felt fake or lesser. Once I actually educated myself on lab diamonds and understood what they are, my perspective completely changed. I think a lot of the stigma comes from that same misconception, because I definitely had it too.

Hot take: I think some of the hate toward lab diamonds comes from diamonds losing their status-symbol power. A 1 ct natural that felt like a huge flex decades ago doesn’t necessarily read that way anymore when larger lab stones are so accessible. We’re probably entering an era where carat size matters less, and uniqueness/alternative stones/bespoke settings/personal style matters more. At the end of the day, get the ring you value. Natural, lab, big, small, just live and let live. Your ring doesn’t need to impress anyone but you.

I think it’s because it’s too perfect, I love natural antique stones because they’ve been worn and have inclusions.

100% bc people now have a harder time feeling elite. I have a lab, but a “smaller” stone (my preference, a simple ring w cute hidden design). And no one can tell it’s lab. 😂😂😂

When everyone is walking around with 5 carat engagement rings it really cheapens lab grown. I wish people would just use lab diamonds in more realistic ways like a size that’s realistic to what’s affordable to them.

It’s not that we “don’t like” lab-grown diamonds. It’s that somewhere along the way, the lab-grown brigade decided that preferring natural diamonds requires a moral defense- while conveniently ignoring that ethically and responsibly sourced mined diamonds absolutely exist. And the ethical soapbox gets a little shaky when so much of the appeal seems to be getting a 5+ carat ring for a fraction of the price. Which is totally fine! There’s a market for lab, and there’s a market for natural. Just spare us the moral superiority and let those of us who value the rarity, history, and heirloom quality of a beautiful, responsibly sourced natural diamond enjoy ours without the lecture. 💎

I have my GIA certification in diamonds. For me, I just find natural diamonds fascinating. The idea that a diamond forms over millions of years deep in the earths surface is just fascinating! I don’t mind lab diamonds, just showing my appreciation for natural diamonds. 💎

People don’t realize how little lab-grown diamonds actually cost to produce compared to what they’re being sold for. The markups are insane, and consumers are being sold the illusion of luxury and rarity for something that can be mass-produced at a fraction of the retail price. It’s honestly misleading.

Yes but I also think people crave realness sometimes. Not to say lab grown aren’t “real” diamonds but it’s like the AI thing. Everything is too perfect and people crave the imperfection for its character
