@tobiasdogtraining: The benefits of using pieces of a toy to build foundations are that we get intensity and motivation for free. But that only happens if we do it in the right way. The idea behind it is that when he dog finds the piece he should react as if he found the whole toy. If we go too quick to small pieces we will not get that effect. The small piece will probably not even remind the dog of the toy at all and therefore the effect would be as if we trained on any other neutral scent. The process starts with having the whole toy in the wall and let the dog grab it and play with it when he finds it. From there we continue with large pieces and make sure the dogs reaction is strong and that the intensity continues to increase. The piece is too small if the dog can pass over it without finding it or if he turns his head away when he finds it. Then I quickly place a bigger piece again. Everytime I go to a smaller piece I check to see that the reaction still is the same. That is the same reaction I want to see all the way down to the smallest amount I intend to train my dog on. Training a dog to find small scent pictures is not very difficult. Training them to do it with high drive and focus is something else. That only comes from solid foundations and by doing things in the right order. #DogTraining #detectiondog #workingdog #searchdog #k9
