Crowds told police they should be “ashamed” of themselves after escorting asylum seekers to safety. Asylum seekers had to be evacuated in Thetford during anti-immigration disorder in Norfolk that has continued for three nights and led to two police officers being taken to hospital. Police responded to reports that a group of people were trying to gain access to a residential properly in Clover Way on Wednesday night with some reports suggesting a small group managed to enter a home and remove a phone. While intervening, a male officer was struck with a rock while a female officer was “seriously bitten”. A third officer was spat at, police have said. Two men were arrested on suspicion of public order offences, harassment and possession of an offensive weapon. A man in his 40s remains in custody while 68-year-old Brian Thompson has subsequently been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, a wooden bat, and bailed to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 25 August. On Tuesday, windows were smashed and fences broken when crowds tried to break into properties in three different roads. Norfolk Police’s Chief Constable Paul Sanford defended the police’s response, saying on Friday it was necessary to “escort the residents of those properties away for their safety”. When asked what might have happened if officers had not intervened, he said: “I think it’s highly likely that the protesters would have got into the property they would have created a significant problem, and really threatened the safety of the occupants, and indeed the protesters themselves.” The police boss “absolutely refuted” claims that officers had been too aggressive saying that over three consecutive nights, “a group of people have crossed the line as to what is acceptable. And we have been appropriately policing those behaviours”. Increased police powers were granted Thursday night allowing officers to direct people to remove face coverings or leave the area if they commit or “may commit”’ anti-social behaviour. Reform UK’s deputy leader Richard Tice claimed the disorder is a sign “local people are furious that large numbers of illegal migrants are being dumped into their locality”. The town’s MP, Terry Jermy said that the “ugly scenes” had been “difficult to watch” and were “deeply concerning”. The protests come amid plans to house more asylum seekers in former military barracks – including at RAF Barnham near Thetford. #5News #thetford #police
