On March 30, 1976, 24-year old William Lee Thompson and his accomplice Rocco James Surace brutally tortured and murdered 23-year old Sally Ivester in a motel room in Miami, Florida. The crime began as an attempt to extort money from the families of two women staying with the men Sally Ivester and another woman named Barbara Savage. Thompson and Surace ordered both women to call their families to demand cash. Driven by fear, Ivester told the men she believed she could secure between $200 and $300. However, when she was only able to successfully obtain a mere $25, Thompson and Surace became completely enraged by the shortfall and the two men forced Ivester into a bedroom and subjected her to prolonged, systematic physical torture. They repeatedly beat her using a variety of weapons, including a chain-link belt, a heavy club, and a nightstick, while also burning her with cigarettes and a lighter. The violence culminated in a severe sexual assault using a wooden chair leg, which inflicted catastrophic internal injuries and severe internal bleeding. Despite her critical condition, the men dragged her outside to a public phone booth to force her to make one final, desperate call to her family for money before bringing her back to the room, where she succumbed to her injuries later that day. The suspects were apprehended shortly after the murder thanks to the survival and cooperation of Barbara Savage. Savage, who had been held captive and witnessed the brutal crime, was able to provide detailed eyewitness testimony to the Miami police. This testimony, combined with the forensic evidence recovered from the bloody motel room, led to the swift arrest of both Thompson and Surace. Both men plead guilty leading to Surace to be charged with Second-Degree Murder and sentenced to life in prison while William Thompson was charged with First-Degree Murder, Kidnapping, Involuntary Sexual Assault/Battery. He was sentenced to death in 1976 and has been on death row ever since#truecrime #murder #criminal #creepy #fyp
