Any of these to disagree with? 1. You SHOULD google your cancer. Maybe don’t google the 1st night when you are terrified and convinced you have 3 weeks to live. But after that… google the crap out of it. Learn your cancer. Learn your biomarkers. Read your scans even if you only understand half of it. Look up your drugs. Look up trials. Learn enough to know what questions you should be asking. There is A LOT of bad info online though. Studies, cancer centers, medical journals… good. Some guy named Gary on Facebook ain’t a medical journal. 2. Smokers with lung cancer deserve just as much compassion as I do I never smoked and I talk about that because people still think lung cancer = smoking. But why does that decide how sad we are when someone gets cancer? We treat heart disease. Diabetes. People who got hurt doing something risky. Nobody is checking if you lived a perfect life before deciding if you deserve to live. Smokers are people… they have kids and spouses and people who really want them to stay alive too. 3. Everything does NOT happen for a reason!! I don’t think there is some beautiful reason I got stage 4 cancer while raising two little kids. Bad things happen to good people for no reason. A cell makes a bad copy. DNA gets messed up. The cell keeps growing when it wasn’t supposed to and… here we are. Maybe I can do something meaningful with what happened to me, I hope I do. But it is not the why. No great calling for me should put my babies into a situation where their mama is gravely ill. 4. You SHOULD question your doctor!! Doctors are people. Cancer is complicated and the science moves REALLY fast. A great doctor can miss something. Another great doctor might have a totally different idea. Ask why. Get the second opinion. Bring the study you found. Ask about the weird trial you found at 2am… I do. And my doctor still likes me :) Your oncologist went to medical school and you didn’t. Obviously. But also… you’re the one living with what happens next. The stakes are so different. 5. Cancer patients are allowed to be weak… I don’t have to be brave every day. I don’t have to smile through treatment. I don’t have to find the silver lining. I don’t have to tell everyone “I got this” when some days… I really don’t feel like I got this. (Some days I do!) I think sometimes people need cancer patients to stay positive because it makes THEM feel safer. If I’m smiling and fighting and being inspirational then maybe everything is gonna be ok… and everyone around me gets to breathe a little easier. But that can be a lot to put on someone who is already just trying to survive. Sometimes I’m strong. Sometimes Im hopeful. And sometimes I want to fall apart and have somebody else be strong for me. Cancer patients should get to do that too. I’m not a monolith.
