i just ugly cried for like 10 minutes because a mom in California sent me a hug at 2:52am. That sentence would have made absolutely no sense to me before becoming a mom. 😂 But here we are. It had been one of those nights. Not even a particularly dramatic night. Nobody was sick. Nothing was technically “wrong.” It was just another night of being needed over and over and over again. Baby woke up. Fed her. Put her down. She woke up again. Rocked her. Put her down. I finally crawled back into bed and then heard her again. At some point I stopped checking the clock because every time I looked at it I got more angry knowing morning was getting closer. And then came that weird postpartum combination where you’re exhausted enough to cry but somehow too wired to sleep. So I’m sitting there in the dark with my phone on the lowest brightness possible, trying not to wake anyone else up. And I opened this app. There’s a map that shows moms who are awake right now. Not “active today.” Not people who posted sometime this week. Actually awake. Right then. I started looking at all the little dots. There were moms awake all over the country. Some feeding. Some pumping. Some rocking babies. Some probably doing exactly what I was doing, sitting in the dark wondering how everyone else in the house could possibly be sleeping so peacefully. 🙃 Then I noticed I’d gotten a hug. From a mom in California. Sent at 2:52am. I don’t know her. I don’t know her name. I don’t know if she was feeding a newborn, pumping in her kitchen, trying to get a toddler back to sleep, or just lying awake because postpartum sleep is apparently a cruel joke where you’re exhausted all day and then your brain decides 2am is the perfect time to remember every embarrassing thing you’ve done since seventh grade. But she saw my little light. And she sent me a hug. That’s it. No advice. No “have you tried…” No questions about whether the baby is sleeping through the night yet. No telling me I should enjoy every second because “it goes so fast.” Just another mom awake in the middle of the night saying, in the smallest possible way: I see you. ❤️ And apparently that was all it took. Because I LOST IT. Like silent crying so hard you have to wipe your face with the sleeve of the sweatshirt you’ve been wearing for two days. Motherhood is so weird. You can spend your entire day touching another human being and still feel incredibly alone. You can have a partner sleeping ten feet away and feel like you’re the only person awake in the entire world. You can have people who love you and still desperately want someone to understand what this exact moment feels like. And sometimes you don’t actually want to talk. You don’t want to explain yourself. You don’t want to answer “how are you?” You just want someone else to be awake. Someone who gets why 2:52am feels different when you’ve been up four times already. Someone who knows the sound of the pump in a completely silent house. Someone who has stared at a sleeping baby and thought, “please stay asleep,” while simultaneously wanting to pick them back up because they’re so tiny. Someone else on the night shift. I think that’s what got me. I looked at that map again and realized every single dot was somebody’s mom. A real woman in a real house having her own version of this night. California. Texas. Florida. Ohio. Across the ocean. Hundreds of bedrooms and nurseries and couches glowing quietly in the dark. We don’t know each other. But somehow we’re all awake together So to the mom in California who tapped a little heart on her phone while I was having a rough night: You probably forgot about it 30 seconds later. I didn’t. You made a very tired mom sitting in the dark feel a little less invisible. And then you made her ugly cry. 😂❤️ I’ll take it. There are so many of us awake with you💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
