Domestic violence is not only sustained by the person who inflicts it. Too often, it is sustained by the silence surrounding it. Not every survivor is ready to speak. Not every person is ready to leave. Healing has its own timeline, and safety must come before judgment. Everyone deserves an environment where they can regain their footing, rebuild their confidence, and make decisions at their own pace with dignity, support, and without fear. But there is another conversation we must be willing to have. Those who witness abuse, recognize the patterns, hear the threats, see the control, or know that someone is being harmed and deliberately choose to look the other way, can become part of the environment that allows abuse to continue. There is a particular contradiction when those trained to recognize human suffering can identify abuse in someone standing before them and still choose silence. Education, credentials, professional titles, and public advocacy mean very little if compassion disappears when practicing it becomes uncomfortable. Awareness is not simply what we say publicly. It is what we are willing to do when someone’s safety is quietly placed in our hands. And too often, the person experiencing violence carries the shame while the person causing it continues without it. That is one of the cruelest inversions of abuse. The shame never belonged to the survivor. Some will heal quietly today and find their voice tomorrow. Some may take years. There is no acceptable timetable for reclaiming yourself. But we all have a voice - a powerful one. Sometimes trauma teaches us to silence it, question it, or believe that using it will cost us more than remaining quiet. Part of healing is discovering that the voice was never gone. Learn to trust it. Learn to use it. And when you are ready, take your power back. Not because what happened defines you but because it no longer gets to. 💜 @forabetterdayfoundation #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth #BreakTheSilence #TakeYourPowerBack #HealingWithDignity #EndDomesticViolence
