@classics.journey: Michael Douglas is opening up about one of the hardest periods of his life. In his new memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” the 82-year-old actor reveals that he lost 40 pounds while battling stage 4 throat cancer more than 15 years ago. Douglas was diagnosed in August 2010 and underwent seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. He described the treatment as feeling like “the seven circles of hell.” The actor wrote that by the third week, the pain had become extremely difficult. After four weeks, he said he was “sallow and gaunt,” while exhaustion took over nearly every part of his day. Even so, Douglas tried to keep life normal for his children, Dylan and Carys. He continued taking Carys to school, despite being so exhausted that he would return home and spend much of the day on the couch. “That couch had become my chair, my desk, my table, my bed, my life raft,” he wrote. The experience also deeply affected his family. Douglas recalled that his father, the late Kirk Douglas, stayed strong but surprised him one Halloween by appearing at the hospital dressed as a clown. After treatment, Douglas learned his cancer was in remission. He said the moment left him crying and changed the way he viewed his life. He emerged from the experience with a greater appreciation for family, love and time. Sometimes the hardest chapter of life can change what matters most.
