QUEENSLAND’S FIRST TRADITIONAL HINDU TEMPLE CROWNED BY A HAND CARVED TOWER SOUTH OF BRISBANE Sri Selva Vinayakar Koyil is widely regarded as Queensland’s first traditional Hindu temple, consecrated in 1995 after years of fundraising and construction by the local Tamil and wider Hindu community. Built in classic South Indian style by sculptors brought out from South India, it sits on four and a half acres of bushland beside the Logan River. It remains an active place of worship, so a visit is a genuine window into living Hindu tradition, not a museum stop. THE TEMPLE 🛕 Ganesha: The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, known as Vinayakar, the remover of obstacles. 🗼 The tower: A hand carved gopuram covered in painted figures rises around twenty metres above the grounds. 🪨 The craft: Stone carvers and artisans were flown in from South India to build the shrines in traditional Dravidian style. WORSHIP AND CULTURE 🔔 Daily prayers: Rituals and prayers run morning and evening across the day. 🎉 Festivals: The calendar fills with major celebrations including Ganesha Chaturthi, Navaratri and Diwali. 📚 Community: The site also runs cultural and educational programs for the local community.
