I have a concern about how insurance companies handle customers’ medical history. When we apply for insurance, the company asks us to declare our complete medical history and existing medical conditions. However, when we later make a claim, the insurance company may obtain or investigate our historical medical records and use previous medical information as a reason to reject the claim. If the insurance company has the ability to access or verify our historical medical information, why do they require customers to provide the same information again when purchasing the policy? It would be much fairer and more transparent if the insurance company reviewed the customer’s medical history before accepting the policy and before the customer starts paying premiums. If a particular illness or pre-existing condition is not covered, the company should clearly declare and document the exclusion at the beginning. Customers may pay premiums for many years believing that they have medical coverage. Then, when they are hospitalised and actually need the insurance, the claim may be rejected based on a medical condition or historical information that the insurance company could have identified earlier. This creates a feeling that the customer is being allowed to pay for years, only to discover the exclusion when they actually need the coverage. In my opinion, the process should be more transparent and fair: medical history should be properly assessed at the beginning, exclusions should be clearly stated before coverage starts, and customers should not be surprised by major exclusions only after making a claim.
