Ashton Kepler's family has asked for one small thing. They want an empty chair in his honor at next June's graduation. His sister, Alexeea, says the school district told them no. Ashton died in a motorcycle crash last month. He was 17 and lived in Newark, New York. The crash happened in Arcadia. He was part of the Class of 2027. Alexeea says her brother gave much of his time to the community. He worked at Canal View Family Restaurant and was a student athlete. She says the district offered something else. District leaders told the family they cannot provide a chair. They also cannot let the family walk in his place to get his diploma. Instead, they offered a private ceremony. Only family could attend. Alexeea says Ashton's family is larger than just his blood relatives. The district has explained its approach before. When another student died last year, a district spokesperson said it follows trauma-informed practices. It said an empty chair is not a district practice, to prevent further harm. Alexeea sees it the other way. She says not honoring someone who has passed gives more trauma than doing it. She says the family is still hurting. The family is not giving up. They plan to attend the next school board meeting, Wednesday, October 21, at 6 p.m. They hope the board will change its mind. How would you want a school to remember a classmate who is gone?
