Michael Douglas Says He Had Such Bad Stage Fright Early On That He'd Throw Up Before Going On Stage Michael Douglas is a two-time Oscar winner. But he says acting was not always easy for him. In a new interview with PEOPLE about his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas talked about his reluctant path into acting. He is the son of actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill. He said he once "resented" his father for the time he spent away working. He had no plan to follow in his father's footsteps. Then, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he had to declare a major. "What I know best is theater," he recalled. His stage fright was severe. "I used to have a wastebasket off stage which I'd puke in before I go on," he said. He added, "It was really painful." One night, his father came to see him play a messenger in a college production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Douglas said he rushed through his speech as fast as he could. Afterward, he said, his dad told him, "Michael, you were terrible." Douglas said he thinks his father was relieved. Later, an acting coach named Wynn Handman helped him. Douglas said Handman's encouragement made him excited to go to class instead of terrified. Another moment came while he was playing a New York City lawyer who has an affair in Fatal Attraction. Someone told him, "the camera can tell when you're lying." He said that once he understood acting as a craft, it became "so much more joyful." Why did he choose the title? "It was a roller coaster starting from childhood," he said. Would you have guessed he struggled with stage fright? #Michael #Stage #Memoir #Fatal #CelebrityNews
