This is not a trap; I am genuinely trying to determine whether your principle has any moral constraint independent of suffering reduction. Suppose, hypothetically, that the only possible way to permanently eliminate all future suffering were to torture every presently existing sentient being to death—every human and every other sentient animal—and that no less horrific method could achieve the same result. Would you endorse or permit doing it? If yes, then am I correct that, under your view, there is no amount of suffering, no violation of autonomy, and no atrocity inflicted upon existing beings that becomes morally impermissible if it is necessary to prevent a greater quantity of future suffering? If no, what moral principle makes the torture impermissible, and why does that principle not also constrain the involuntary extermination of beings who want to continue living?
