Pero el personal fue muy compasivo y amable. Le dieron todo lo que necesitaba para que se sintiera seguro”. Estrada fue uno de los muchos padres de alumnos de las Escuelas Públicas de Portland (PPS, por sus siglas en inglés) que dedicaron la tarde a mostrar su apoyo a sus escuelas. Todos estamos en una etapa de duelo en este momento, escuchando un escenario para 14 escuelas y otro para 11. Pero va a afectar a todo el distrito en su conjunto con diferentes cambios de límites y diferentes cambios de programas que van a ocurrir”, dijo Alicia Chávez, presidenta de la Asociación de Maestros de Portland. Los líderes del distrito tuvieron que soportar duros testimonios de padres, maestros y estudiantes. “Las pruebas demuestran que el cierre de escuelas es perjudicial y afecta a nuestros alumnos más desfavorecidos”, declaró Jackie Wirz, madre de un alumno de las Escuelas Públicas de Portland (PPS). “Imaginen lo que podríamos lograr juntos si tuviéramos más tiempo”.
