This mysterious deep-sea squid has 10 limbs - eight arms and two tentacles - that appear remarkably similar, each extending into extremely thin, thread-like filaments. Some observations suggest these animals can reach several meters in total length, with most of that incredible size coming from the long filaments hanging beneath their bodies. Unlike the powerful tentacles we normally associate with squid, Magnapinna's limbs can bend at strange, almost elbow-like angles before trailing vertically through the darkness. Even more unsettling is how little we actually know about them. Magnapinna squid live thousands of meters beneath the surface, where sunlight never reaches and direct encounters are extremely rare. Much of what scientists know comes from brief footage captured by deep-sea submersibles and remotely operated vehicles.
