HTTD: How’s Nolo Doing? UPDATE 3 - Typhoon Nolo: We’ve neglected this storm for way too long… so here’s the third update for the now Typhoon Nolo! Anyhow, Nolo has been active within the Western Pacific Basin for the past 2 days, where it was formerly known as Hurricane Nolo and is now considered Typhoon Nolo as it crossed into the Western Pacific as a Category 2 hurricane, coming off from a high-end Category 4 peak when it was stationed southwest of the U.S. state of Hawaii, where Nolo appeared to have a secondary peak shortly after entering the basin as a mid-range Category 3 major typhoon. The storm is now down to a Category 1 typhoon, where it is currently approaching Japan’s Ogasawara Islands but is ultimately not expected to get there. As of this moment, Typhoon Nolo currently has maximum sustained winds of up to 80mph (~130kph) with an estimated central air pressure of 979mb, moving west-northwest at an estimated speed of 23mph. Typhoon Nolo is currently nowhere near any land regions and is expected to stay relatively away from land throughout the storm’s entire course. The JTWC does project the storm to lose typhoon intensity within the next 12 hours, where it will stay as a severe tropical storm for the next 3 days after that period, with the agency forecasting Nolo to perform a sharp curve to the east-northeast by mid-Friday (Zulu), which will make the storm move away from the Japanese mainland. Forecasting models at the moment are giving moderate amounts of confidence with the potential track of Typhoon Nolo throughout the next 5 days, with a majority of models appearing to predict a similar pattern to that of the JTWC, although with significant spreading for any time beyond 48 hours. Thankfully, however, Nolo is not expected to make any impacts against any form of land, but we’ll continue to closely monitor the storm this week.
