I knew it twice and the second one was the most memorable coz it was his best friend who told me that a week before grad (imagine my devastation). Back then I was so frustrated why he was not brave enough to tell me that, not even till the very last day. We didn't have a term or phrase to coin that but now it hurts to relate to "Always liked but never pursued" 🫠
