@tempestinstruments: Marco Polo wrote about spirits in the sand. The sound is REAL, and you can play it: hearit.now/dunes #SingingSand #SandDunes #MarcoPolo #StrangeSounds #DidYouKnow
As an Arab, this explains so much of our culture and folklore

Each desert sounds different?? Whoaaahhhh it must have something to do with the SHAPE and properties of the sand itself!

I read something on this actually! The different sounds come from centuries of dune sediment. As the dunes settle and wet seasons pass through, it forms a harder shell around the dune that more sand settles onto. From what I read it creates small acoustic chambers where more sand rubs together to create different tones. You can set this cascade off by walking on a dune, sliding on it, and the air can blow sand that hit the dunes that creates that whistling sound on the breeze. Whether that's the actual reason or not is beyond me, but I think it makes the most sense. There are some guitarists around the world that explore this concept more by tuning their guitar so it's more resonant with the wind.

If you can make big crystals sing with vibration and what-not, then I would suspect that sand being tiny little crystals might also act the same way when it’s dry. Different crystals = different sounds maybe. No-matter what it turns out to be, it’s cool

What exactly did the sand make the men do that caused their deaths?
Also, physicists "still arguing" is part of the job description. All academics do that 😅
