Tuesday: the White House communications director explained that the "media freakout" was "not rooted in reality," because the president was "clearly stating" something else entirely. The same week, he told reporters that germs have gotten "stronger and smarter" and are "like an army." Last week, he joked to a White House crowd that complimenting women's looks is "the immediate end of your political career," a bit he's now run at least four times. None of this is new. Back in 2020, after he wondered aloud whether disinfectant could be injected to fight COVID, he said he'd been asking the question "sarcastically." Every time, the same cleanup crew rushes in. A spokesperson translates. A cable host explains. Your uncle in the comments says you're taking it too literally. It's exhausting, and that's the point. When outrage becomes routine, people stop flinching. We used to expect presidents to choose their words carefully because their words move markets, militaries and millions of people. Now a whole industry exists just to tell you what he really meant. But words spoken from the Oval Office aren't jokes.
