Calling people morons for saying “give it to a kid” completely misses the point. Nobody is saying you’re obligated to give away a ball you caught. You earned it. But baseball has always had a tradition of players and fans giving baseballs to kids because, to a kid, that $20 baseball can become a lifelong memory. An adult catching a baseball is cool. A kid catching one can be the reason they fall in love with baseball for the rest of their life. That’s why people cheer for it. It’s not complicated.
