@liftrunbang: Calf myths debunked “Calves are purely genetic. High insertions this low insertions that” Regardless of tendon length you can build your calves. Yes people with high tendon insertions will typically have smaller calves because they simply have fewer overall fibers to grow. But this doesn’t mean they can’t grow their calves larger. “Calves are mostly slow twitch so you need to do lots of reps or endurance style work”. The gastoc is not predominantly slow twitch. The soleus is. And this doesn’t even matter because it’s also a myth that slow twitch muscles need more reps or endurance work. If that were true then Henneman’s size principle of motor unit recruitment wouldn’t be true. Bur the fact is you should train calves just like any other muscle and heavy loads reduce voluntary activation deficits faster. Sets of 5/6 work great. How to grow your calves larger quickly - use a straight legged position on either a standing calf raise or leg press - train them first in the workout when fatigue is at its lowest - hold the stretch for 3/5 seconds in each rep - the calves grow well from stretch alone and like the lengthened position - only come up to neutral - the gastric loses plantarflexion torque after neutral so it’s the soleus doing more work there - the gastrocs length to tension relationship also dictate that it doesn’t produce significant tension at short lengths - train the calves 2-3 times a week. And stop using the seated calf machine. It doesn’t train the gastroc only the soleus. And the soleus gets trained in the straight legged positions.
