If any type of nurse is making $40 an hour, it’s crazy. I’m an account manager for insurance company and make 85K plus bonus No degree, not even a health license.. and yes, I am lucky, most people need it .and in California we do make more, but come on, nurses need to make more money around this country.

Ima add to the convo not stepping on toes 🫣 this only applies if you have SET 8 hour shifts (and occasionally depending on hospital system) . If it’s SET 12 hour shifts they aren’t obligated to pay time and a half after 8 when you staff. They find their way around that OT law by saying that’s your regular shift. I’m set 12s. Now if it’s a traveler on a contract and even if they set 12s they get the time and a half after 8.

This is not standard in California. This must be health trust. A regular staff full time, part time, or per diem a regular 12 hour shift is straight pay, the only differential received is night shift differential and weekend differential which can vary drastically. Most are not starting pay that high especially in SoCal. Night differential can be as low as $2/hr to as high as $10/hr from what I’ve seen (for staff). The only extra pay you get is if you stay over past your 12 hour shift which most hospitals will only allow you to stay an additional 4-6 hours, at the double time rate. So those extra 4-6 hours making your full shift 16-18 hours is the only extra pay you get for a staff employee. Now if you come in an extra day of the week you aren’t scheduled, you have to work more than 4 hours because in California you are not working overtime until you’ve work over 40 hours. Meaning if you work a 12 hour shift (a 4th day in the week) you are only going to get paid over time pay for the last 8 hours of your shift. 9/10 times hospitals will not let you work at the overtime rate unless they are very desperate so they will try to control how often you get paid overtime. ER, sometimes ICU, are the main units that will allow OT, but don’t walk in expecting this. Also don’t just assume you can be per diem, because most hospitals require 1-2 years of experience in the same unit before you can even apply for this position. So here’s some transparency of what it can actually look like working as a staff RN, in SoCal. NorCal is basically the same except their starting rate is higher! If you’re single and can get hired in NorCal MOVE! Bc the wage difference is insane and the cost of living is not that much higher than it is in SoCal.
