@dailymailpolitics: On October 7, 2001 President George W Bush ordered 'Operation Enduring Freedom', launching bombing strikes against al-Qaeda and Taliban forces in Afghanistan. The Taliban were held responsible for the deaths of nearly 3,000 people in the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11. In the aftermath of the attacks, the U.S. launched what it called a global war on terrorism. On December 17, 2001, the U.S. flag was raised over the embassy in Kabul, restoring an official American diplomatic presence in Afghanistan for the first time in nearly 12 years. The conflict gradually shifted from conventional warfare to an insurgency that would continue for years. #news #politics #onthisday #History
