@couriernewsroom: Public schools banned books nearly 12,000 times last school year, a new record, according to PEN America's annual "Banned in the USA" report. The bans hit 7,370 individual titles, and more than 4,500 of them were on the list for the first time, from "Jane Eyre" to the manga series "Tokyo Ghoul." Florida and Texas, where lawmakers have passed restrictive laws, account for many of the removals. PEN also found that district administrators are increasingly using AI to decide which books to pull. The most-banned title is "Sold," Patricia McCormick's novel about a girl trafficked into sexual slavery. Stephen King is the most-banned author for the second straight year, with 312 removals. Books about race, sexuality, and gender identity are still the most common targets.
