It kinda makes sense by the end but you can mostly just let it wash over you and focus on the important stuff like the character work and the sheol bricks.

absolutely none of it. carl doesnt understand it and we are in his POV. figuring out the train is katias problem. in the physical booka theres a note from matt to not try and figure it out. what is relevant will be explained at the end and even then you dont need to fully grasp it to enjoy the floor.

Understanding the trains is completely unnecessary, just enjoy the story. Lol im glad my book came with a warning to do so at the beginning, because i am totally one of those people who will try to figure out the puzzle while reading. But yea the tangle is tangled and unsolvable to us crawlers lol

Zero. There is a preface at the book that essentially says "this isn't my best work, I'll do better next book" I've considered a fan-fic rewrite of book 3 because the Iron tangle is so convoluted.

I agree with the idea of just letting the train tangle info wash over you as sort of background noise. The character development, relationships, alliances, new characters, new critters, etc. are meant to be the main takeaway.
