The IFR's World Robotics 2026 report says 5.079 million industrial robots were in operation at the end of 2025, up 9% from the previous year. Factories installed a record 603,307 new industrial robots in 2025, an 11% increase from 2024. It was the first year installations passed 600,000. China led the world, installing 354,226 robots in 2025. That was about 59% of all new industrial robots installed worldwide. The United States ranked second with almost 38,500 new robots, up 12%. Japan ranked third with 36,219 installations. Robot installations also increased across major industries. Electronics and automotive factories each saw 10% growth, while the metal and machinery industry grew 22%. Collaborative robots, known as cobots, reached a record 66,000 installations in 2025, making up about 11% of all new industrial robots. The IFR expects about 655,000 new industrial robots to be installed worldwide in 2026. Source: International Federation of Robotics, World Robotics 2026

About 3.5 million factory robots were already operating worldwide in 2021, before the recent AI boom. By the end of 2022, there were about 3.9 million. So millions were already working in factories welding, painting, assembling and moving parts.
