There was a version of motherhood I imagined before I became a mother. I imagined the cuddles, the tiny hands, the first smiles, the memories, the magic. I never imagined the trenches. I never imagined how lonely it could feel to be responsible for another whole human being while barely having enough of yourself left to give. I never imagined the exhaustion that sleep couldn’t fix, the days that blurred into nights, or the mornings where I woke up already completely depleted. There were seasons where I wasn’t trying to thrive. I wasn’t trying to be the perfect mum, create beautiful memories, or have it all together. I was simply trying to get through the day. Wake up. Feed us. Keep us safe. Get through the next hour. Breathe. Do it again. Some days, keeping us both alive and making it to bedtime felt like the only thing I had in me. I did so much of it with very little support. I had to figure things out while I was already exhausted. I had to make decisions while doubting myself. I had to comfort a little person while sometimes desperately needing comforting myself. I had to keep going on the days when nobody was coming to take over, nobody was telling me I was doing a good job, and nobody really saw just how hard I was fighting to hold everything together. And somehow… I figured it out. Not perfectly. Not gracefully. Not without crying. Not without questioning myself. Not without having days where I felt completely lost. But I figured it out. I learnt my baby. I learnt myself. I learnt how to survive the days I thought would break me. I learnt that sometimes strength looks nothing like strength. Sometimes it looks like getting out of bed when you desperately want to stay there. Sometimes it looks like making dinner with one hand and holding your baby with the other. Sometimes it looks like crying in the bathroom for five minutes, washing your face, and going back out because your little human needs you. Looking back at these photos, I don’t just see a mother and her child I see a woman who was exhausted beyond words, but kept showing up. I see the nights, the tears, the uncertainty, the tiny victories, the moments of wondering whether I was doing any of it right. And I see us. We made it through those trenches together. Maybe I didn’t have all the support I wished I had. Maybe I didn’t get the village people talk about. Maybe there were moments when I felt like I was carrying far more than one person should have to carry. But every single day, I got up and tried again. And eventually, the survival became living. The figuring it out became knowing. The fear became confidence. And the little person I was once just trying to keep alive became the reason I discovered just how much I could endure. I’m proud of the mother I became in the seasons when nobody was watching. Proud of the version of me who kept going with a tired heart, empty hands, and very little help. Because sometimes motherhood isn’t about having it all figured out. Sometimes it’s about figuring it out as you go. And sometimes, making it through is the greatest achievement of all 🤍
