When Brother Emmanuel went missing in 2022, our house became a graveyard of silence. He was in 200L then, a bright boy with his whole life ahead of him. He was on his way back to school when his bus collided with a trailer. It was a bloodbath. They found the engine, they found the passengers’ luggage, they found bodies that were beyond recognition, but they never found Emmanuel. We shared flyers at every motor park from Lagos to Onitsha. We paid for announcements on the 7:00 PM news. My mother fasted until her skin clung to her bones, but for four years, there was nothing. No body to bury, no son to hug. Then came two weeks ago which was March 2026. It was Emmanuel’s birthday, the exact anniversary of the day he disappeared. We were sitting in the sitting room, my mother quietly weeping over his old photo, when the gate creaked open. There he was. He didn’t look like a man who had been missing for four years. He looked exactly like the 200L student who had waved us goodbye in 2022. He was wearing the same faded denim shirt and carrying the same brown traveling box. He hadn’t aged a day. His skin was smooth, his hair was cut in the same style, and even the dust on his shoes looked... old. My parents didn’t care about the logic. They screamed, they rolled on the floor, they hugged his knees while thanking God for a “miracle.” They asked him where he had been, how he survived that horrific crash. He just looked at them with eyes that were as flat as a stagnant pond. “I don’t remember,” he said. “I just found myself at the bus stop and decided to come home.” I was happy too, at first. But that joy lasted exactly three hours. By the first night, I realized something was very wrong. Emmanuel doesn’t sleep. I’ve stayed up watching him since we shared bedroom. He just sits on the edge of the bed, perfectly still, staring at the wall until 4:00 AM. The first night, I asked him why he couldn’t sleep, he said “He doesn’t want to” but it became an everyday thing. He just keeps to himself and stays locked in his room except my parents forces him to join us at the dining. I forgot to add the fact that he speaks to himself when nobody watches, like he was communicating with an invisible person. I knew about this because I kept a close watch on this person that looked like my brother. Recently, we were having a family dinner, a Thanksgiving meal. We were all laughing, trying to make him feel at home. Suddenly, Emmanuel’s head snapped back. He hit the floor so hard I thought his skull had cracked. We rushed to him, screaming his name, but before we could touch him, his eyes popped open. He looked like someone who was struck with convulsion and he began to say things like “They are looking for me... Don’t let them take me away...” It didn’t make sense at first when he said that until “They” showed up and that was then I knew why my brother suddenly appeared after all these years...
