As a Latina that doesn't speak fluent Spanish I had to learn enough cuz my family & other Latinos talk shit about me when I am in the same room! The one that hurt the most was my mema talking down about me to my mom & them doing it right in front of me!

Me and my boyfriend went to a Mexican restaurant. Our waiter (Hispanic woman) started talking my boyfriend in Spanish who is Mexican asking him what he wanted to drink, then when it was time for her to ask me what I wanted to drink proceeded to talk to me in English. Me being Afro Latina, I said to her Hablo espanol pq le hablas a el en español y no a mi and she stood there with the most awkward face in shock. After I said that to her, she proceeded to talk to me in Spanish until it was time for us to leave. As a black woman in America, some Latinos really think Spanish is a secret language and it is not. Just because we look different, does not mean we can’t speak Spanish

a few years ago I had a manager from Panama: afro-latina, spanish was her first language and she spoke fluent english but she is dark skinned looks ~phenotypically black. i am light/mixed and have been mistaken for latinx before and sometimes now people don't even ask they just start speaking spanish to me and luckily i know just enough to struggle thru a conversation. one day this group of women came in the store and spoke no english at all so i asked them to wait for my manager to come translate. she says in perfect español "hi how can i help you?" and they looked at her like she had two heads and refused to speak directly to her and wanted to instead continue struggling with me and my very very subpar spanish instead🥴 the blatant racism is actually enough now
