The concept places secure detention cells directly inside stores, allowing security workers to temporarily hold suspected thieves while stolen merchandise is documented, surveillance footage is reviewed and police are contacted. The cells feature steel bars, locking doors, security cameras and benches, with multiple holding areas allowing several suspects to be separated at once. Perhaps the most unusual part is their location. Shoppers can continue pushing their carts through the store while passing directly alongside the detention area. The idea has already sparked plenty of debate, with some calling it bizarre and others arguing that the embarrassment of sitting behind bars in full view of shoppers could become a powerful theft deterrent. If the concept proves successful, similar setups could eventually be considered at additional locations.
