Just a little clarification — those are granaries, rather than ruins, and there’s a much deeper story behind them. ❤️The Grand Canyon is connected to 11 associated Tribes, whose ancestral homelands, migration routes, food systems, and cultural practices are deeply connected to this landscape. Our ancestors traveled throughout the canyon and surrounding areas, and granaries like these were used to store seeds and food for their journeys and communities.
If you have the opportunity, I really encourage you to ask your tour guide about the Tribes of the Grand Canyon and their history here. These places aren’t simply remnants of the past. They are still sacred and meaningful to Tribal people today. Tribal communities continue to return to these sites every year to monitor them, care for them, and maintain those connections.
There’s a lot more to the Grand Canyon than what you can see from the overlooks — for many of us, this isn’t just history. This is home. ❤️
