@pornotheologist: The Goths are not the first members of a timeless dark aesthetic. The Metropolitan Museum's Ostrogothic pendant from Domagnano, dated to the late fifth or early sixth century, belongs to a specific material and political world in Italy. Its surviving workmanship offers a historical object, not a general philosophy of haunting. That distinction matters because later uses of 'Gothic' can make a people's name seem to have been waiting for cathedrals, novels, and black clothing. The proposed comparison with AG:NG should begin by refusing that retrospective destiny. A name can travel without carrying an unchanged substance. An inherited label is a trace of historical operations, not proof that everything subsequently gathered beneath it expresses one ancestral intention. The same restraint applies when the philosophy's own multiple names and inflections are read: similarity of designation does not authorize replacement of one situated meaning with another.
