That is a pain in the ass. It's easier to use a little piece of paper, stick it between the number dial, spin the dial until the paper moves down, that's the number.. repeat.

older, cheaper locks I used to be able to unlock by pulling the ends apart and seeing which dials moved sideways. a little trial and error and I was able to borrow a bike for the school day
