@kiwinrlpodcast: Born in Motoʻotua, Samoa, Jacob Laban moved to New Zealand at four and grew up in Wellington. After playing junior league for the Te Aroha Eels and Randwick Kingfishers, Laban moved to Auckland and entered the Warriors system—making his NRL debut in 2024. Eligible to represent both Samoa and New Zealand, Laban sought the blessing of his Samoan father, Patelesio, a respected matai, before committing to the Kiwis. “I was born in Samoa and obviously I could play for Samoa, so I had a chat to my dad. My dad’s Samoan. My dad’s a chief. He’s got a matai.” His father encouraged him to represent the country that had given their family a home and Jacob an opportunity. “I want to pay them back and I still owe so much to them.” Now selected for New Zealand, Laban is ready to fulfil another childhood dream. “You work almost your whole childhood to try and make NRL debut, and then to represent the country, I’m starstruck.” Born in Samoa.
