@browneyedgurl801: A dangerous form of diarrhea-causing bacteria is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics in the United States, with sexual transmission emerging as an important route of infection. The bacterium is Shigella, which causes shigellosis. Symptoms can include severe diarrhea, sometimes bloody, stomach cramps and fever. The CDC estimates roughly 450,000 Shigella infections occur in the U.S. each year. Shigella traditionally spreads through contaminated food, water or surfaces, but it can also spread during sexual activity involving exposure to tiny amounts of infected fecal material. Only a very small number of bacteria are needed to cause infection. The major concern is antibiotic resistance. CDC researchers analyzed nearly 17,000 Shigella isolates and found extensively drug-resistant strains increased from essentially 0% in 2011 to 8.5% in 2023. These strains resist five commonly used antibiotics, and there is currently no FDA-approved oral treatment specifically recommended for extensively drug-resistant Shigella. Most of these highly resistant infections were found in adult men, and more than one-third of patients with XDR infections were hospitalized. Most ordinary Shigella infections still resolve without antibiotics within about a week. But severe drug-resistant infections are becoming increasingly difficult to treat, making surveillance and prevention especially important.
